Sony FX5 has launched—but delivery has been delayed indefinitely
The FX5 combines a new stacked full-frame sensor with open gate and internal RAW. The camera was due to ship in August, but Sony has postponed the Japanese launch without setting a new date.

Sony unveiled the FX5 on 22 July as the new compact member of its Cinema Line. On paper, it occupies an appealing middle ground: a small camera body with features more commonly associated with larger production cameras. Then came the setback. The planned Japanese on-sale date of 21 August was postponed, and Sony has not yet announced a new date.
A compact Cinema Line camera with big ambitions
The FX5 is built around a newly developed, fully stacked full-frame sensor. Sony claims more than 15 stops of dynamic range, three base ISO settings and Dual Base ISO. The camera can record using the full sensor height in open gate, deliver internal X-OCN RAW, and shoot up to 5K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120, and Full HD at 240.
That makes the camera interesting for small film crews, documentary makers and creator productions seeking Cinema Line flexibility without stepping up to a large rig. Open gate provides extra room for vertical cropping, stabilisation and multiple delivery formats from the same footage.
The launch has been postponed
On 18 August, Sony Japan said that the launch of the FX5 and the DVF-EL1, XLR-H2 and VMC-BNCU1 accessories had to be postponed due to production circumstances. The notice says that a new on-sale date has not yet been set.
The official notice applies to the Japanese launch. Availability and delivery schedules may vary between markets, so Norwegian buyers should check updated information with Sony and local retailers before planning a production around the camera.
What does this mean if you are considering the FX5?
The key point is to distinguish between the product and its delivery. The specifications still make the FX5 a highly exciting camera. The uncertainty is over when it can actually be purchased and delivered. Do not sell or rebuild a working camera rig before you have a confirmed delivery date.
For many, alternatives such as the FX3, FX6 or an existing hybrid camera will still get the job done. The FX5 is most compelling when open gate, internal RAW, high frame rates and the compact body offer a measurable production advantage.
The Creator Brief assessment
The FX5 looks like a camera designed for modern one- to three-person productions: enough image quality and recording flexibility for serious work, yet small enough for gimbals, handheld shooting and quick rig changes. The delay does not change that assessment, but it does make purchase planning less predictable. Wait for a confirmed local date before factoring the camera into autumn assignments.
